Spring Semester in 2003

The course provides an introduction to information theory. Emphasis will be on three aspects - coding for data reduction (data compression or source coding), coding for error protection (channel coding), and coding for data encryption (crptography).

Topics include, entropy and mutual information; noiseless coding theorem, construction of compact codes; channel coding theorem; error correcting codes; cryptography and information theory; algorithmic information theory; rate distortion theory;
