Teaching Philosophy ... My views on teaching and learning have been evolving over time. At the very beginning of my career, my teaching energy was spent preparing the best possible lectures that I could, and transferring my knowledge to students. It became noticeable during the oral exams (yes, european universities have oral exams) that many students memorized course material, but they were unable to reason below the surface of definitions and concepts taught in the classroom. This was not consistent with my teaching goals. Since then, I have been trying to change my approach in order to motivate students for in depth learning and understanding. Nowadays, I try to provide an active classroom environment where students are encouraged to participate in the construction of conclusions, based on the description of basic principles. I believe it is of utmost importance to encourage students to become good thinkers and develop their cognitive skills. This type of teaching is accomplished with questions and discussion opportunities during class, as well as through practical assignments and discussions of real life applications. In our field where new technology is being developed daily, interaction and communication between students are as important as interaction with teachers, because it promotes cooperative problem solving, a highly regarded virtue in computing industry. So far, the feedback from students was very positive. If you have taken any of my courses at WVU and want to send me your opinion, please do so. |

Teaching Evaluations ... In order to better inform students about what they can expect in my classes, I decided to make my teaching evaluations available. If you have an opinion on whether teaching evaluations should be made public or not, feel free to send me an e-mail.
