About Independent Study (CS 695)

Independent Study is not a regular course. This designation is used for independent study by LCSEE Masters graduate students.

If you wish to obtain credit using this course number, you must present a proposal to a faculty member for a program of independent study, and obtain his/her agreement to supervise your program. You should begin planning for this study and identify a supervising faculty member long before the semester begins. The faculty member listed on the schedule as the "instructor" for these course numbers is not "offering" independent study and will not, in general, be your supervisor.

Indepedent study is normally used when a student has an interest in pursuing a specialized area for which no regular course is available. It may not be used to substitute for a course which is regularly offered, even if that course is not on a schedule that is convenient for the student.

The primary responsibility for developing the study plan rests with the individual student. Agreement must be reached with a faculty member before registering for this course number.

If you are interested in an independent study under my supervision, please contact me at least one month before the start of the term in which you wish to register.  Ordinarily I will supervise Independent Study only for students who have taken one of my graduate courses and identify a specific area related to that course that they wish to study in greater depth.

If you register for CS 695, please notify Dr. John Atkins as to who is supervising your study. You are responsible for ensuring that your supervisor provides a grade to Dr. Atkins at the end of the semester.

Only one independent study may be counted as part of your MS course plan.  You will need to provide Dr. Atkins with a brief written summary of your study topic, signed by your supervisor, when your final plan of study is submitted for approval.
