Research courses are not regular courses. These numbers are used by Masters and Doctoral students, respectively, for research directed toward your problem report, thesis, or dissertation. Courses numbered 697 are for Masters research, and courses numbered 797 are for Doctoral research.
You can only register for research if you have a Program of Studies on file. Your committee chair approves your registration for this course. You must register using the level (697 or 797) and discipline (CS/CpE/EE) that matches the degree you are seeking.
For administrative convenience the Graduate Coordinators or Associate Chair are listed as instructors for these courses. This does not mean that these individuals will be the actual supervisors for your project. Your committee chair will approve your registration; however, the graduate coordinator or associate chair receives a course roster with your name and will be asked to supply your grade (which will be S or U) at the end of the semester.
If you register for research, please notify Dr. John Atkins as to who is your committee chair. At the end of each semester or summer term in which you are registered for research, it is a good idea to check with your committee chair to be sure he or she has forwarded your grade to the person who holds the roster. It is your responsibility to ensure that your grade is submitted.
