Title: New Directions in Video Coding
Speaker: Dr. Xin Li
Lane Department of CSEE
WVU
Date: Mon. Feb. 10, 2003
Time: 4-5 PM
Location: MER 113, WVU Evansdale Campus

Abstract: This talk consists of two parts. In the first (introductory) part, I will briefly discuss basic ideas behind hybrid motion compensated predictive coding, a general framework which covers most existing video coding standards; and wavelet-based lossy coding, which has been the basis of new image coding standard JPEG2000. In the second part, I will summarize recent works of mine on wavelet-based video coding and present several new perspectives on understanding the relationship between motion and location uncertainty model of image singularities.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Xin Li received the B.S. degree with highest honors in electronic engineering and information science from University of Science and Technology of China in 1996, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, in 2000. He was with Sharp Laboratories of America, Camas WA as a Member of Technical Staff from Aug. 2000 to Dec. 2002. He has been with Lane Dept. of CSEE since Jan. 2003. His research interests include image/video coding and processing. Dr. Li received the Best Student Paper Award at the conference of Visual Communications and Image Processing, San Jose, CA in January 2001.
