Abstract: This brief presentation gives an overview of digital communications from practical perspectives first. Five major components of digital base band modem design will be addressed: Modulation, coding, synchronization, channel and systems. Some new research results concerning decoding schemes may also be presented later per seminar progress.

Speaker Bio: Shuzhan Xu is a system engineer in The Mobile Terminal Division of Agere Systems. His job functions include communication systems architecture, digital base band signal processing, and implementations. Focused on chipset development, he has conducted research on practical decoding schemes with some patent applications. Dr. Xu holds a PhD in Mathematics and a Master in Electrical Engineering.
