Abstract: The medical device industry is an exciting and dynamic
field, and working in this industry can be challenging and rewarding at the
same time. Due to the nature of the medical device industry, there are some
unique requirements for engineers working in this discipline. Medical device
engineers have to be aware of FDA and other applicable governmental regulations.
They have to be able to work with people in various fields including medical,
regulatory, manufacturing, quality, marketing, and customer service. Using his
real life job as an artificial heart engineer as an example, the presenter will
discuss the challenges of being an engineer in today's medical device industry
and address the question of how can one prepare for these challenges before
getting to the real world.
Speaker Bio: David H.J. Wang received his Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University, and a Bachelor's degree of Electric Engineering in China. Currently, Dr. Wang is working as a system engineer at CardiacAssist, Inc., a Pittsburgh based medical device company. His job functions include system design, implementation, and validation. Dr. Wang is leading the project of developing a pediatric artificial heart.
